Removing background...
How it works
Upload an image, or paste a link
Drag and drop a file, choose one from your device, or paste the URL of a public image.
The background is removed automatically
An open-source segmentation model finds the subject and cuts it out, right on our server.
Pick a background and download
Keep it transparent, or pick white, black or any color. Crop it if you like, then download.
Why Clearcut
Private by design
Images are processed in memory and deleted within an hour, sooner if you click Delete now. Nothing is written to disk.
Free, no account
No sign-up, no watermark, no usage limit beyond a fair rate limit to keep the service running for everyone.
Works from a URL too
Don't have the file on hand? Paste a public image link and we'll fetch it for you.
Any background color
Keep it transparent, or swap in white, black or a color you pick.
Crop before you download
Straighten up the frame or cut to a square, 4:3 or 16:9, right in the browser.
Good for
Product photos
Clean, consistent backgrounds for an online store or marketplace listing.
Profile pictures
A plain background for a headshot, avatar or team page.
Presentations and design
Cut out a subject to drop into a slide, poster or mockup.
Quick social edits
Swap a busy background for something plain before you post.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no payment. A rate limit keeps any one visitor from overloading the service for everyone else.
Do you keep my images?
No. Each image is processed in memory and deleted automatically within an hour, or immediately if you click Delete now. It is never written to disk and never used to train anything.
What file types and sizes are supported?
PNG, JPEG and WebP, up to 15 MB and 25 megapixels.
How well does it handle hair and fine detail?
Edges are refined at full resolution, but very fine detail like loose hair or glass is softened rather than perfectly matted. It works best when the subject is clearly separated from the background.
Can I use an image from a URL instead of uploading it?
Yes. Paste a public http or https image link and the tool fetches it for you.
Do I need an account?
No. There's nothing to sign up for.
Is this made with AI?
Yes, in one specific place: an open-source segmentation model, running on our own server, decides which pixels are the subject. Your image is never sent to a third-party AI service.
